About Us

Anti Goon Activism (AGA) is a public charity focused on awareness, education, and practical support for individuals and communities affected by compulsive media use (sometimes referred to colloquially as “gooning”). We build evidence-informed programs that emphasize healthy habits, attention hygiene, and positive alternatives.

  • Workshops for schools, parents, and employers
  • Peer support groups and digital detox challenges
  • Open-source toolkits for healthier media habits

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to reduce harm from compulsive media behaviors by empowering people with knowledge, community, and practical skills. We envision a world where technology supports well-being rather than fragmenting attention and eroding relationships.

Why “Gooning” & Compulsive Media Use Can Be Harmful

Attention & Productivity

Constant novelty-seeking can dysregulate the brain’s reward systems and shorten attention spans, leading to task-switching, procrastination, and poorer learning.

  • More interruptions → lower deep work time
  • Habit loops make quitting harder over time

Mood & Sleep

Late-night scrolling and overstimulation can worsen sleep quality and correlate with anxiety and low mood—especially when used to cope with stress.

  • Blue light and arousal delay melatonin
  • Doomscrolling increases stress reactivity

Relationships

Excessive solo media use can replace in-person connection, reduce intimacy, and create secrecy or conflict with partners or family.

  • Less presence during shared time
  • Isolation and avoidance patterns

Physical Health

Sedentary routines, irregular meals, and disrupted circadian rhythms associated with binge-like media sessions can affect overall health and energy.

  • More sitting, less movement
  • Irregular sleep–wake cycles

Note: If media use is causing significant distress or impairment, consider speaking with a qualified health professional. AGA provides education and peer support; we do not offer medical treatment.
